The lineup of Keynote Speakers for Tokyo Forum 2022

BAN Ki-Moon 【onsite】

Former Secretary General, The United Nations

BAN Ki-Moon is the chairman of Ban Ki-moon Foundation for a Better Future and the Distinguished Chair Professor and Honorary Chairman of the Future Strategy Institute at Seoul National University.
Mr. Ban served two consecutive terms as the Secretary General of the United Nations (2007-2016).
Throughout his tenure at the UN, Mr. Ban strove to give voice to the world’s poorest and the most vulnerable people, and to make the Organization more effective. He combated climate change culminated in the rapid entry into the landmark Paris Agreement in 2016. Mr. Ban worked closely with member states of the UN to shape the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to establish UN Women, which has been advancing the Organization’s work for gender equality.

President, The University of Chicago

Paul Alivisatos is President of the University of Chicago and John D. MacArthur Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Chemistry. A preeminent scientist and entrepreneur, his pioneering research in nanomaterials have demonstrated key applications of nanocrystals in biological imaging and renewable energy. President Alivisatos was previously Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the University of California, Berkeley, where he held numerous positions including Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and founding Director of the Kavli Energy Nanoscience Institute. Alivisatos received a B.A. in chemistry from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in chemistry from Berkeley.

HASEGAWA Mariko 【onsite】

President, Graduate University for Advanced Studies

Dr. HASEGAWA Mariko joined The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI as a professor in 2006. She went on to serve as a dean of Department of Evolutionary Studies of Biosystems in 2007, as a dean of School of Advanced Sciences in 2011, and then as an executive director in 2014. Dr. Hasegawa became President of SOKENDAI on April 1, 2017.
She earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo.
Before joining SOKENDI, she worked at the Tanzania Wildlife Service, as an assistant at the Laboratory of Anthropology, Department of Biological Science, Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo. She also taught as an associate professor and professor at Senshu University, as an associate professor at the Department of Anthropology at Yale University and as a professor at the School of Political Science and Economics, Waseda University.
Her research expertise includes Behavioral Ecology and Physical Anthropology, and she conducted research on wild chimpanzee, fallow deer and wild sheep in Great Britain, peafowl in Sri Lanka. Recently she in conducting research on human evolution and adaptation.
She received the Hidaka Award from the Japan Ethological Society in 2012.

This year’s Tokyo Forum will be back as an in-person event at Yasuda Auditorium and will also be available on live-streaming.

“Tokyo Forum” is an annual symposium co-hosted by the University of Tokyo and the Chey Institute for Advanced Studies in South Korea.
This year's main theme is "Dialogue between Philosophy and Science" .
In a world facing various problems such as wars, pandemics, and climate change, we need to develop new common understanding on what society should be like, in order for human beings to live more prosperous lives.
We will unpack these issues through deep and thoughtful discussions. This year, the forum will be held at the University of Tokyo's Yasuda Auditorium in-person and online.
