PROFILE
Elaine is currently a lecturer at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. In her technical field of expertise, she works in an inter-disciplinary research space, with her research focusing on understanding the fundamental principles that govern microbial growth, colonisation and transport within heap bioleaching systems. Her interest in the mineral bioleaching extends to the development of mathematical models to describe the impact of changing solution chemistry and inoculum composition on mineral-microbe interaction and heap performance. Elaine has applied the knowledge gained in mineral bioleaching studies, to the treatment of secondary resources such as electronic waste (ewaste), for the design of process flow-sheeting options for the treatment of WEEE and the subsequent selective recovery of valuable metals from the leachate, thereby contributing to the circular economy.

Elaine is a fellow of the Next Generation Researcher (NGR) initiative undertaken by the UNU-IAS and ESDA. Under the NGR initiative, her research focuses on the impact of mining activities on rural-urban linkages associated with land use and water resource management and its effect on the sustainability and resilience of communities during the life of the mine and post mine closure.
