Key Questions

What are possible common values that may be acceptable both for diverse local communities and for humanity as a whole to achieve sustainable society?
Are indigenous knowledge and endogenous local values that have been cultivated through the long history of a community compatible with global sustainability thinking?
SDGs are holistic goals for the entire humanity. Actual actions on the local level may be organized according to the local contexts. How should we manage the process towards sustainability without excluding diverse localities?

Format of Session

This full-day session consists of an introduction session, two sub-sessions and a concluding session. Each of the sub-sessions is represented by selected new generation researchers from different regions and disciplines who focus on sustainability aspects of certain local problems. An overall discussion session will be conducted among the presenters and some renowned commentators, followed by an open discussion with the floor. Invited speakers should be selected so that cultural, regional, and disciplinary diversity can be properly maintained. Presenters will be invited both from natural and social sciences and also from various regions in the world through The University of Tokyo’s strong academic network including IARU (International Alliance of Research Universities).
