PROFILE
Bruno Carvalho has published widely on relationships between cultural practices and urbanization. He is the author of the award-winning Porous City: A Cultural History of Rio de Janeiro (2013), and co-editor of books including Occupy All Streets: Olympic Urbanism and Contested Futures in Rio de Janeiro (2016). He is also co-editor of the book series Lateral Exchanges (2017- ) on historical and contemporary issues in design and the built environment. Currently, Carvalho is writing a book on different ways in which people imagined urban futures during the past two centuries. He received his Ph.D. at Harvard University (2009), and taught at Princeton University between 2009-18.

At Harvard University, Carvalho is a Professor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Co-Director of the Harvard Mellon Urban Initiative, and Affiliated Professor in African and African American Studies and in Urban Planning and Design at the Graduate School of Design. He is also a member of the Faculty Advisory Committees on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights and in the Initiative in Global History, as well as a Faculty Affiliate of the Afro-Latin American Research Institute, the Center for the Environment, and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
