Eric Avila began his academic career at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1997 after earning his B.A. (1990), M.A. (1992), and Ph.D. (1997) from the Department of History at the University of California at Berkeley. At UCLA, Avila is affiliated with three departments: History, Urban Planning, and Chicana/o Studies (where he currently serves as department chair). Avila is an urban and cultural historian of twentieth-century America, with a special focus on the rise and development of Los Angeles since its Spanish/Mexican origins.
