PROFILE
Joakim Palme is professor of political science at the Department of Government, Uppsala University, since 2009, and Chairman of The Migrations Studies Delegation (Delmi), United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (Forte). He is a member of the Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. Palme holds a PhD in sociology from 1990, Stockholm University. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, he contributed to the Social Citizenship Indicator Program (SCIP) at the Swedish Institute for Social Research (SOFI). He chaired the Swedish ”Welfare Commission” 1999-2001. From 2002 to 2011 he was the Director of the Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm. He has published extensively on the welfare state as a strategy of equality and the politics of the welfare state. His publications also include studies of European social policy, ageing societies, social investment and migration. Palme co-authored The Generational Welfare Contract: Justice, Institutions, Outcomes with Edvard Elgar (2017). He is one of the editors of Welfare and the Great Recession: A Comparative Study and of Bridging the Gaps: Linking Research to Public Debates and Policy Making on Migration and Integration, both with Oxford University Press (2019).
