PROFILE
Juan Du is Associate Professor, Associate Dean, and Director of the Urban Ecologies Design Lab of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong. She also directs IDU_architecture, with design projects ranging from the extent of built forms to the social and ecological processes of the city. She holds Doctorate of Science from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Master degree in Architecture from Princeton University and is the recipient of a US Fulbright Fellowship for her research on Shanghai’s urban transformation. Juan Du’s field of expertise is on the interrelationships between architecture and the city, her current research and design focus is on the interactions between top-down urban planning and bottom-up informal settlements, specifically Shenzhen’s “urban villages” of Shenzhen, and Hong Kong’s “subdivided units”. Her upcoming book “The Shenzhen Experiment: The Story of China’s Instant City” will be published by Harvard University Press in December 2019. In addition to teaching, research, and practice, she has exhibited and curated internationally, including serving as chief curator of the Hong Kong Pavilion of the 2010 Venice Biennale. Juan Du was born in China and immigrated to the US at a young age, with subsequent education and professional practice in the US, Europe, and Asia. Prior to joining HKU, she has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Peking University.
