シェルドン・ガロン

SHELDON GARON is the Nissan Professor of Japanese Studies/Professor of History and East Asian Studies at Princeton University, where he has taught since 1982. He has a B.A. from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis; an M.A. from Harvard University; and a Ph.D. from Yale University. A specialist in modern Japanese history, he also writes transnational history that spotlights the flow of ideas and institutions between Japan, Europe, and the United States. His book, Beyond Our Means: Why America Spends While the World Saves (2012), has received global attention from media, museums, nonprofit groups, international organizations, and financial institutions because it offers recommendations on what Americans might learn from European and East Asian policies to promote saving. His current project is a transnational history of “home fronts” in Japan, Germany, and Britain in World War II, focusing on aerial bombardment, food insecurity, and civilian “morale.” Previous publications include Molding Japanese Minds: The State in Everyday Life (1997) and The State and Labor in Modern Japan (1987), and he coedited The Ambivalent Consumer: Questioning Consumption in East Asia and the West (2006). He recently spent several months researching in Germany as a winner of the Humboldt Research Award.
