PROFILE
Ichiro Sakuma received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in precision machinery engineering from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 1982, 1984, and 1989, respectively.

He was a Research Associate at the Department of Precision Machinery Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Tokyo from 1985 to 1987, a Lecturer at the Department of Applied Electronic Engineering, Tokyo Denki University, Saitama, Japan, from 1991 to 1999 and an Associate Professor at the Institute of Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, from 1999 to 2001. He was a Professor at the Institute of Environmental Studies, Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the University of Tokyo, from 2001 to 2005. He has been a Professor in both the Department of Precision engineering and Department of Bioengineering since 2006. He served as the Vice Dean of the School of Engineering, and Director of the Institute of Innovation in International Engineering Education from 2014 to 2017. He has been a Professor at the Medical Device Development and Regulation Research Center, School of Engineering since 2012. He has been serving as the director of the Research Institute for Biomedical Science and Engineering (an interdisciplinary research unit between the Graduate School of Medicine and Graduate School of Engineering) since October 2017.
