Masayoshi Son is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of SoftBank Group Corp (SBG), a strategic holding company that invests in breakthrough technology to improve people's quality of life around the world. Founded in 1981 initially as a PC software distribution business, SBG and its portfolio of companies have expanded to cover a range of technologies, including advanced telecommunications, internet services, AI, smart robotics, IoT and clean energy.
Mr Son has overseen investments in some of the world’s fastest-growing technology companies. In May 2017, SoftBank announced the first major close of the SoftBank Vision Fund, and with over $97 billion to help extraordinary entrepreneurs transform industries and shape new ones. Through these investments, and the continued evolution of its operating companies, SBG is transforming from a telecommunications carrier into a strategic holding company. Mr Son serves on the Vision Fund’s Investment Committee and is actively engaged in advancing SoftBank’s cluster of No.1 technology strategies.
Alongside his responsibilities at SBG, Mr. Son is Chairman of SoftBank Corp. (the domestic telecommunications subsidiary of SBG), Director of Z Holdings Corporation, which owns Yahoo Japan Corporation, Director of Alibaba Group Holding Limited and Director of Sprint Corporation, the US communications services company. He also serves as Chairman and Director of the world’s leading semiconductor IP company, Arm Limited, which SoftBank acquired in September 2016.
Following the Great East Japan earthquake of March 11, 2011, Mr Son founded the Renewable Energy Council, the Great East Japan Earthquake Recovery Initiatives Foundation and the Renewable Energy Institute. In December 2016, the Masason Foundation was established to provide an environment that enables youth with high aspirations and exceptional talents to develop their skills, and to support those who will create the future in the coming age of Singularity.
