PROFILE
Sato is currently a Global Scholar (Visiting Professor) at the Woodrow Wilson School of International and Public Affairs of Princeton University. He is currently working on the long-term impact of controversial development projects in Southeast Asia and re-appreciating the concept of “dependency.” At Princeton, he teaches courses on Environment and Development in the context of Asia. He has four singled authored books on development and natural resources in addition to three edited books in English such as Governance of Natural Resources: Social Purpose of Materials in Nature (UNU Press, 2013) and The Rise of Asian Donors: Japan’s Impact on the Evolution of Emerging Donors (Routledge, 2011). Sato has published in peer reviewed journals such as Comparative Studies in Society and History, World Development, Journal of Development Studies, Development and Change, and Sustainability Science. He won the 10th Japan Academy Medal in the field of humanities and social sciences for the year 2013 and the 21th Okita Memorial Prize on International Development Research in 2017. He holds an MPP from Kennedy School at Harvard University and a PhD in International Relations from the University of Tokyo.
