PROFILE
Sawako Shirahase is a professor of sociology in the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, the University of Tokyo. She earned her master’s degree in Ochanomizu University and later received her D.Phil in sociology from University of Oxford.
Her main research interests include social stratification and aging, gender and generational inequality, and wealth in advanced capitalist societies. She is Vice President of International Social Association and also Board Member of Research Committee 28.
She joined the University of Tokyo in 2006, and became a professor at the Department of Sociology in 2010. She served as Associate Dean of Graduate School of humanities and Sociology from 2014 to 2016, and became Vice President of the University of Tokyo in 2018. She is currently Executive Vice President of the University of Tokyo in charge of International Affairs and Public Relations.
